How to cut Celotex insulation and Kingspan insulation boards
Many of our customers ask how they should go about cutting the rigid insulation boards we supply and our answers vary really depending on how the insulation board is to be installed. Firstly the board thickness does make a difference when deciding on the appropriate tool, as any boards less than 30mm we would suggest either a stanley knife or even a breadknife!! as cutting these boards with a saw can sometimes cause excessive damage to the edge. When the board gets thicker we would suggest using a fine toothed handsaw such as a tenon saw but it has to be the type of tenon saw without a reinforcing ridge across the top of the saw so the whole saw blade can cut through the material. When installing 100mm plus thick celotex insulation boards or Kingspan board in between roof rafters for friction fitting it makes life easier if the board is cut at a very slight angle enabling the board to be pushed in with slightly less friction than if cut dead straight. we Advise in all other situations i.e for installing under screed or for use in walls that the boards are cut as straight as possible to ensure a nice clean join. All of these type of boards cause dust when cutting so it is advisable to wear an appropriate dust mask to stop any dust being inhaled.
